Our Story
Corral Consulting developed out of the insightful vision of Richard Xavier Corral, who while in graduate school at UCLA’s Luskin School of Public Affairs discovered an interest in consulting, yet realized that most of the major firms did not service the diverse and underserved communities he identifies with.
To help empower these communities’ social change agenda, Richard embarked on a mission to personally consult the businesses servicing these communities. He created a business model and platform that assembles professionals of diverse skills, content expertise and networks to provide a comprehensive suite of business services and expertise. Officially launching part-time in 2008, Corral Consulting became Richard’s full-time career in 2010 and has since added two business partners and six consultants.
Richard envisions Corral Consulting as a firm that provides the distinct experience, expertise and networks needed to reveal business strategies that optimize financial growth and social impact. Corral Consulting has cultivated lucrative business opportunities for clients in corporate, government, private and nonprofit sectors by identifying and addressing their special needs in communications, community engagement, evaluation, fundraising, policy, research, education & training, and organizational management.
Corral Consulting continues to assist businesses across all sectors, particularly those that serve minority and at-risk communities, thereby promoting diversity and social change.
Letter from our Founder
As an Angelino and proud member of both the Latino and LGBT communities, my introduction to social justice began early in life. California’s anti-immigrant and racist Propositions 187, 209 and 227 as well as the anti-LGBT Proposition 22 inspired my student activism at the University of California at Berkeley and solidified my lifelong passion and commitment to social change. Through these experiences, I learned that passion alone could neither achieve nor sustain social change as these movements often struggle to communicate their success, cultivate new leadership and sustain their impact. I ultimately realized that basic business thinking and skills were often absent from social change movements, that this toolkit was essential to success and that consulting offered a career path to effect change in a more strategic and sustained way.
As a graduate student at UCLA’s Luskin School of Public Affairs, my exposure to and interest in the consulting field grew after frequent interactions with local consulting firms that participated in career day events. Although I was impressed by these firms and their work, their clients consisted mostly of wealthy individuals and businesses and the diversity of each firm’s staff was limited. I determined that if I wanted to consult clients that served the communities I identify with, I’d have to develop and lead a firm myself.
I officially launched Corral Consulting in 2008 as a part-time business while working full-time as a project manager and researcher at two of UCLA’s most well-respected research centers. In 2010, I assumed a full-time position as Corral Consulting’s CEO and Principal Consultant and have since grown the firm to include two business partners and six consultants that shared my passion and commitment to social change.
Corral Consulting is Los Angeles’ premiere private consulting firm for interim executive leadership and comprehensive business solutions. The firm’s partners and consultants bring a diverse array of business skills, networks and content expertise: two MBAs, communications experts, multilingual facilitators, philanthropic advisors, graphic designers, and business development experts. We serve clients from all sectors – corporate, private, nonprofit, philanthropic, and government – working to affect social impact and progressive change in education, health and wellness, green economies, LGBTQ equality, place-based initiatives, supplier diversity.
Corral Consulting leverages our clients’ inherent power and expertise to grow their business and enhance their social impact. Our clients are deeply committed to working at the forefront of their fields, often leading efforts to address challenging social issues with limited time and resources – issues whose solutions are rarely ready-made.
In response, Corral Consulting offers a comprehensive set of skills, strategies, content expertise and networks rarely assembled in one firm that are essential in today’s diverse and fast changing world. Corral Consulting’s approach to solution-making mirrors the world at large – we embrace inherent complexities, diversity and contradictions to inspire and inform solutions that are at once elegant, intelligent and effective.
Corral Consulting’s partners, professionalism and approach to consulting are inspired by our home, Los Angeles. Los Angeles’ demographic and social trends are often predictive, forecasting national developments. Therefore, we believe that the knowledge, lessons, strategies and leadership produced from Los Angeles’ social impact and business leadership should be better harnessed, packaged and shared nationally with those working to affect change regionally. Our firm’s partners personify Los Angeles and perceive the unique assets of our home as invaluable ingredients to our client’s success. What distinguishes Corral Consulting is our ability to bring out the best in our clients, empowering them to move from vision to action.
I am rooted in a personal and professional commitment to promoting and informing the business of social change. I’ve spent the past 22 years cultivating a greater understanding of the important role that business skills and thinking play in efforts to sustain social change. My personal life mirrors my professional life in the sense that I’ve cultivated a strong network of friends, allies and business contacts that are not only committed to social justice, but business’ important role in creating and sustaining social change. Experience has taught me that it really does take a village to advance social change, a village of diverse skills, perspectives and relationships that converge around a common vision of equity and shared leadership.
